St. Martins FC 2 Cammell Laird 1970 0
St. Martin’s last win in the ‘North West Counties League Division 1 South’ was celebrated following a 4-1 win v Abbey Hulton United a healthy start to 20020 but sadly that has been followed by three consecutive defeats, leaving them firmly at the bottom of the league. The Saints hadn’t kept a clean sheet since their win on the 10th August over Cheadle Town in what was then their third consecutive win at the beginning of this season so a very impressive 2 – 0 defeat over ‘Cammell Laird 1970’ on Saturday 15th February was received with justifiable pride, winning via two really well constructed goals and keeping a clean sheet in traitorous weather conditions. This was a hard fought result that started with Saints Keeper George Austin making an early acrobatic save from CammellLaird striker Tom Douglas. From that early warning point the Saints defence led by the assured Jeffery Agyman were excellent throughout the game stamping out any threat that Cammell Laird presented.
After watching their efforts in attack thwarted by the Saints alert defence Cammell Laird’s defence was split in the 11th minute by a Saints four man counter attack of precision passes that was initiated by Joseph Foster and completed by WilliamWell’s calm chip into the corner of the net. Joseph Foster secured a deserved, and much needed win for Saints in the 64thminute scoring his sides 2nd and what turned out to be their match-winning goal.
